ARE WE TAKING CHARGE?

ARE WE TAKING CHARGE?

Sulaiman B. Sowa Makeni, Sierra Leone #THE AFRICAN YOUTH T he continent of Africa is vast and populated, with half of its population constituting youth. This singular feature, is a great potential for its growth in the international competitive arena, however, this seemingly youthful population turns out to be the continent’s biggest problem. I have always held on to the belief that Africa would only rise when the youth take charge, this belief, however, has been weakened by the spate at which youthfulness is taking direction in the continent. Recently I quietly did a personal head count of youths who languish in anti-social youthful exuberance and came to a conclusion that; we are yet to take charge.

A Real Flame That Ignites

A Real Flame That Ignites

Adugna Hirpa Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Talk is cheap when it is before deeds. Blessed are those who use their words only to explain their actions. I believe this is what the young generation of Africa need. Things that are heard after they have been seen practically and ideas that became flesh and proved to help Africa. It is only with the real flame that the youth of Africa will be ignited. Not the fake one. The fake flame creates the illusion of real gas flames, but uses absolutely no flammable products.  The real flame is when light and heat are given off by combustion - in this case it is difficult to remain unburned. I wish this era to be an era we celebrate practicality. An era of hard work and sacrifice to bring the real flame. There is an African proverb that says “Wisdom is like fire, People take it from others” (DRC). Wisdom, the real fire, creates a movement. Wisdom is knowing when to apply knowledge. Football players are trained to be skilled enough to make any kinds

Viva Africa! Viva Ignite The Youth!

Viva Africa! Viva Ignite The Youth!

I believe to ignite something is to start... Or dare I say stir up a simultaneous and unanimous action! In this case, I believe we are spurring on our brothers and sisters towards the cause of a better Africa. Truth of the matter is, a lot has been said about change in our nation. Only misconception is the fact that people think there is a need to hold a certain form of title behind which they can then draw the mandate to effect such change, I know many who have held such a title and with absolutely nothing to show for it!

THE ROLE OF SPORTS IN SOCIETY !!

THE ROLE OF SPORTS IN SOCIETY !!

Modibe Julius Modiba Johannesburg, South Africa As I was walking back home in the dusty streets of Daveyton I realized something, I realized the high number of the black youth just gallivanting around and sitting in the corners of our streets. It then hit me that there are hardly quality sports facilities around. I mean if our townships had proper quality sports facilities, high level coaching and a professional administration how better would our black societies be today? I mean let's be honest you never see white kids hanging around the corners of white suburbs doing absolutely nothing unlike what you see in our townships.  Now let me make an example, if you go to white schools, school starts at 08:00 until 14:00 and after that it's time for the schools extra mural activities with a variety of sports being offered and then

CORRUPTION!

CORRUPTION!

Tapiwanashe Taurayi Gweru, Zimbabwe "You can't get something if you don't give......" there goes the song of the most celebrated singer in Zimbabwe, Dr. Thomas Mapfumo, called "Corruption ". Recorded in 1989, it articulates how our society has turned into a hive of corrupt activities, where even getting a basic document like a birth certificate, which is your birth right, will need you to pay something in monetary value. Corruption!! But what is corruption? "Corruption" is a very vague expression .However, in formal documents of government, it usually refers to an official's pursuit of personal financial gain by abusing their public power or position. This includes embezzlement of public property, bribe taking, illegally using public money, and other financial crimes committed by public office holders like smuggling.

Setting a new African agenda for victims of Ebola

Setting a new African agenda for victims of Ebola

Bernard Kwofie Ghana "Everyone now appreciates the urgency of curbing the spread of Ebola. But nobody has taken the time to imagine the plight of those dying from the disease!" -  Rachael Mumbi Gichuki, (Fellow Activist and Correspondent, Ignite the Youth Africa). This is another ‘letter of my delusion’. It is in support of the ‘#EbolaZero Campaign’. What saddens me? Even as I write, our girls are yet to be brought back. I only have them in memory. I do not know what has become of them. What is even worse, is we all seem to have ‘shut our senses’ to their plights just as we are doing to the victims of Ebola.  African leaders returned from Washington without them or a plan for them. Perhaps this is to be expected of Africa, we now have something more deadly than ‘terrorism’ in our hands to deal with. This is mere guessing, I am not for it. Neither am I speaking from thoughts. It’s a perception I am ‘birthing’ out of trend.

"African Role Models 2014" - LINDA IHEME

"African Role Models 2014" - LINDA IHEME

There are people who lead by choice, then there are those that find themselves being followed. To speak of Linda, is to speak of a young African woman who did not make a deliberate choice to lead. She finds her self being followed, emulated and becoming the marvel of Nigeria. This is the charisma of Linda Iheme; a nationally acclaimed youth visionary and role model in her country. Meticulous in academic performance, a vocal community activist, health advocate and Change maker. She is followed because those around her aspire to be everything she is becoming. It is a large responsibility to be followed by both young and old, to be held in high regard as a spectacle worth striving for. We see how they adorn her with their congratulations, how they elevate her as their one and only, and now we too shall lend our recognition. But what is it that earns one this much acknowledgement? "Relentless Attitude" - indeed she is relentless in all that she pursues. There is that SOMET
